Of the Three Forces

Three forces are known to move through the world. The peoples of Indithar understand them as conditions of reality — as constant and as unexplained as gravity, or time. Whether they were shaped, discovered, or always present is not known to the living, and the wise do not pretend otherwise.

Light is the force of order, life, and clarity. The Luminous Choir are made of it. Healing draws from it. It is not automatically merciful: light can blind, can burn too cleanly, can refuse to see shadow at all. Its practitioners pay in clarity of intent — the radiance does not come for the half-hearted or the deceptive.

Shadow was once a quiet, native current — preservation, secrecy, the long memory of dark places. Very little of that current remains. What most practitioners now touch is something that arrived through the wound at the world’s heart, and wears Shadow’s shape. It costs life: years, blood, and for the greatest workings, more. The Pact pays this bill with other people.

The Hollow is the force of absence — what remains when life leaves but cannot move on. It is the rarest of the three, and the most dangerous, for it consumes the other two. It preserves. It severs. It keeps what should be lost. The kingdom that mastered it is the kingdom that broke the world, and its price is presence: the practitioner forgets — specifically, irreversibly. A great working can cost a first love, a mother’s face, the name of the city where the caster was born.

Mortals — humans most of all — are aligned to no single force. They are made of all three, in tension. This is their burden, and their advantage: a human may learn any path, slowly, expensively, and without welcome.

One rule is acknowledged in every tradition, across all four powers, without exception: Light is not to be fused with Shadow. This is not doctrine. It is the line whose crossing broke the world, and every apprentice in every discipline is taught what it made.
